Em Estado de Suspensão
Museu Brasileiro da Escultura - MUBE, São Paulo, Brazil
18.06.2016 - 31.07.2016
Albano Afonso has a new solo exhibition entitled Em Estado de Suspensão [In State of Suspension], at the Museu Brasileiro de Escultura (MuBE), from June 18th to July 31st, curated by Cauê Alves. The show is part of the revitalisation project of the museum which has a new curatorial line as a proposal, highlighting the relationship between art, architecture and urban landscaping.
The artist presents a series of mobiles suspended in the air, made of objects such as bronze jars, crystals and a mirrored skull; elements that spin around themselves whilst hovering over the space, merging with a beam of lights projected onto the walls. From a mysterious atmosphere, arises a game of reflections and shadows, an unstable balance between the elements inside a time and a space suspended from reality. The sculptures bring also a kinetic and audible characteristic, given the objects produce sounds touching each other because of the wind, whilst hanging from the ceiling. The works trigger suspense and contemplation, whereas instigating a reflection over the substantial world and the universe beyond the material.
As the curator says: “Albano Afonso’s work approach us to an ecstasy experience as it imposes an interruption in the compass of time. This state of suspension is an elevation as well. A way of pointing out to other dimensions of the space, in which the bodies lose their carnality and their weight, turning into light.”
