Based on the possibility of creation through affection, the artists Marcelo Amorim and Nino Cais presented Poema a dois/Cartas queimadas at FONTE, an independent art space they founded in 2013. With an interlocution and text by the curator Ana Roman, the exhibition proposes reflections on the male body and its relations of approximation and distance between violence and love.

The group exhibition is based on concerns of the artists who have built a relationship of friendship and collaboration over 15 years ago. "The complexity of this relationship is identifiable both in the convergence between themes present in the artists' work, and in common work procedures, which involve appropriating and dissecting images, and facing a kind of pedagogy about the male body and about the masculinities that exist in them. When I was invited to be an interlocutor for the artists in the exhibition, I proposed to weave a kind of common narrative, in which the two poetics come closer and farther apart”, says Roman.

Inspired by Canção de amor, by Jean Genet, which tells the story of a romance between two prisoners who try to communicate through the wall that divides their cells, actress and filmmaker Bárbara Paz produced the video Cartas queimadas (2021). Directed by the artist duo, the film is an analogy to the studio space where Marcelo and Nino work together, and also to the confinement imposed by the pandemic. The video is composed of an excerpt of the feature film still in process that Paz has been drawing collectively with other visual artists.

Using appropriate materials, the works presented converge to a certain questioning around the construction and historical place of the male. Artist Nino Cais shows some of his unique sculpture objects and the series brincos, composed of images of earrings overlaid by photographs of male nudes. Marcelo Amorim, in turn, presents the series Indefesos (2021) and Trote (2021), both created from images in which the male body is (or was) subjected to situations of naturalized violence within the construction of a certain perspective on masculinity.
Seeking to create contexts and provocations for this new stage of FONTE, the exhibition is part of an ongoing project that highlights homo-affectivities in order to promote the circulation of works and research, affectionate and practical approaches on the subject.
