Juliana Cerqueira Leite . Orogenesis

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Naples, Italy

Juliana Cerqueira Leite presents the solo exhibition Orogenesis, at Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, in Naples, Italy, her fist institucional solo show in Europe.

The exhibition is the culmination of two years of research, resulting in a series of new sculptures and photo assemblages: in her complex and expressive work, Cerqueira Leite re-envisions the human body through acts of transformation. She does this through movement and gestures, in a subtle choreography between the force of the body and the materials it presses against.

The starting point of Orogenesis are the Calchi, plaster cast bodies excavated in Pompeii from the XIX century. The calchi show a contracted position that the human body assumes when exposed to intense heat, an involuntary pose forensically known as the ‘pugilistic attitude’. Cerqueira Leite connects the position of the victims of Pompeii eruption to two other contexts belonging to contemporary culture.
